Spain

Spain is a fantastic travel destination. I have spent a lot of time here walking along the many different Camino routes and getting to know the countryside. The people are warm and the food is fantastic. I feel very at home here.

Favorite Spots

Leon

Leon is an delicious little city you must visit if you love food. The local eateries compete with one another for the claim of best tapas. Tapas are complimentary appetizers you are given while drinking. For example if you are to order a glass of wine you may be brought anything from olives to charcuterie and in some cases even mussels or tartar. Bar hopping here is especially fun because you never know what you are going to get! In the evening, the city is alive and dining options are plentiful. I've come here three separate times just to eat, its that good.

Oviedo

Asturias is a unique region of Spain that holds remnants of Roman times that can be seen and felt throughout its boundaries. Oviedo is the capital city of the region and worth a visit. The architecture here is impressive and so is the food. The locals drink massive amounts of Sidra, a fermented "apple juice." I highly recommend trying it, you will appreciate how it is served! Oviedo is considered the cleanest and safest city in Spain and should be on your list of places to visit.

Gijon

Gijon is the largest city in Asturias but has a small seacoast feel. For those only having traveled to the Barcelona or Madrid, this is a stark contrast of the Spain you have seen.

Luarca

Luarca is a tiny fishing village I found while walking the Camino Norte. I liked it so much that I took a an extra rest day here just to eat and smell the sea. Its quaint and friendly town with an abundance of restaurants and a peaceful place to just be.
While in this are I also stumbled upon
Playa de Silencio.
It is one of the most impressive beaches I have ever been to. So much so its getting its own slider below.

Fisterra

Known as the end of the world, Fisterra is a remarkable little town offering amazing views and cuisine. Many travelers continue on here from Compestella culminating their journey along the Camino. There is a great level of excitement buzzing around creating a free and open atmosphere amongst all. There are also some beautiful beaches where you can enjoy the sunset and reflect on how you got there.

All of the restaurants here have great seafood, but if you're looking for something a little extra, try Restaurante Terra.
This tiny little Micheline star gem is outstanding. Only 15 seats! A word to the wise, book in advance and do not pass on the wine paring. The selections were beyond perfection.

Vigo

Vigo is famous for its trans-Atlantic marinas and the natural port found there created by the surrounding mountains. A beautiful little city and yet anther great place to eat! If you have noticed I like to eat and drink. Pulpo (octopus) is king in this area and the oysters from Arcade are not to be missed.

A Coruña

Known for its rich maritime history and blend of old and new, the city's most famous landmark is the Tower of Hercules, the oldest operating Roman lighthouse in the world. The city is also characterized by its unique "galerías," glass-enclosed balconies that give it the nickname "The Crystal City." A Coruña's old town features a maze of narrow streets and historic plazas, including the Plaza de María Pita, named after a local heroine. Beyond its history, the city is a vibrant modern hub with a thriving culinary scene, especially renowned for its fresh seafood.

San Sebastian

San Sebastián is a city where food is not just sustenance; it's a profound expression of Basque culture and identity. While the city is celebrated for its concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants, the heart of its culinary scene lies in the vibrant tradition of pintxos. These aren't just tapas; they're intricate, bite-sized creations—often skewered and displayed like edible art on bar counters. The practice of "pintxos hopping," where locals and visitors alike move from one bar to the next, sampling a house specialty and a small glass of local txakoli wine at each stop, perfectly encapsulates the communal and social spirit of the Basque people.

Caminito del Rey

The Caminito del Rey is a spectacular walkway located in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge near Málaga, Spain. Over decades, the path fell into a dangerous state of disrepair, gaining a reputation as "the world's most dangerous walkway" and attracting thrill-seekers until it was closed following several fatal accidents. After a full restoration, the Caminito del Rey reopened in 2015 as a safe and accessible tourist attraction. It now offers a breathtaking 7.7-kilometer route with a new wooden boardwalk that hugs the sheer cliffs, suspended over 100 meters above the Guadalhorce River.
**Note, its amazing and beautiful, but it is designed for tourists. There is nothing challenging or dangerous unless you happen to be afraid of heights.

Malaga

Malaga is a fun, vibrant city in the south of Spain. Beaches,  beautiful parks, bustling historical plazas, shopping and most importantly, Amazing Food!! There is a wide array of cuisine from moorish influence to Andalusian favorites, but the seafood takes the cake! Be sure check out the seafood market next to Soho. If you plan to go here, drop me a line. I have many excellent recommendations.

Santiago de Compstella

No matter how many times I have been, there is always a special feeling entering this town. I've walked, I've ran, I've seen other arrive and it never gets old. Santiago de Compestella represents many things to many people. Some have pushed their limits to arrive. Other have come for spiritual redemtion or to pay respects. No matter the reason there is an unmistakable feeling of peace and joy this place emotes. In addition to the powerful energy the city is also  full of ornate architecture, bustling streets, music, its alive. If that is not enough reason to make you want to visit, I'll up the ante. The food here is to die for. There are 25 Michelin rated restaurants and countless others that will not disappoint. It is why I always stay an extra day.
